Chabot College Children's Center, Hayward, CA (remodel): PITC Demonstration Project
The Client for this project had a goal to enhance the functionality and scope of the existing Infant and Toddler classrooms and exterior play yards by employing guidelines outlined by The Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC), a collaboration between WestEd and the California Department of Education. Our programming revealed the need to add distinct and separate spaces for infants, younger toddlers, and older toddlers, which would improve the overall pedagogy, and improve group size ratios. We also identified a few elements that were poorly programmed and no longer complied with current licensing standards.
Each remodeled space now has separate toileting & diapering spaces, activity areas, child height sinks, and clearly defined teacher stations. Interior windows, low walls and dutch doors were also used throughout to provide increased visual observation. An existing conference room and adjacent patio was converted into a new classroom and outdoor play area for younger toddlers.
Within the existing Infant classroom: The diapering area was relocated and separated from the main classroom to create a visually optimal, and efficiently oriented space. The nap area walls were reconfigured to provide appropriate window sizes and a dutch-door to meet licensing requirements for visibility and audible monitoring of sleeping infants. A portion of the existing nap area was converted into a teacher’s office. The existing storage space now also serves as an observation room for the Childcare Development program students, teachers, and parents.
Within the existing Older Toddler classroom: The toileting area was reconfigured to allow for child height sink, adult sink and diapering station. Wall heights were decreased to increase observation for the teachers and the teacher’s kitchen area was reconfigured to provide a children’s art sink. The existing storage space was converted into a teacher’s office.
This collaboration was truly a team effort. But working closely with Louis Torelli on this project proved to be an incredibly rewarding experience as well, and the collaboration resulted in a very successful final product.
